GREECE

Greece ACT Route

The ACT Greece will be a truly amazing adventure riding experience that every rider won’t ever forget. The track will lead you trough the big mountains of Greece, riding most of the time in altitude surrounded by breathtaking landscapes.

The start of the adventure will be in Nafpaktos, a beautiful town, located in a bay on the north coast of the Gulf of Corinth. The adventure will lead us first to the south, to discover the mountains in the region of Peloponnisos, taking us from there to the north of the country, crossing the mountains of Pindos, to end in the majestic Vikos Gorges, on the southern slopes of Mount Tymfi.

As we’ll be crossing the most remotes tracks of the Greek back-country, it’s important to pay attention to every detail and to be prepared for all the possible situations, because in many of this regions it won’t be possible to find help nearby.

This is an adventure tour of medium/high difficulty and depending on the weather and the condition of the track, it could be really hard do perform.

Special advices and warnings:

  • It’s only possible to be done between the 15th of May and 15th of October – On the highest areas of the track, the snow and the muddy terrain can make it impossible to ride during the remaining period of the year.
  • We do not recommend to do the ACT Greece track with passenger.
  • Never, ever, do the track on your own – In some areas it won’t be easy to call for help if needed in a situation like a crash or breakdown. In some parts, assistance from another rider can be helpful.
  • Do not ride at night in the mountains, as it could be really dangerous.
  • Always carry the basic camping gear with you, if a problem occur, it might be useful to sleep safely in the mountain.
  • If you camp along the track, please keep your tent closed at all time – There are some non-poisonous snakes but the poisonous spiders could be a serious problem.
  • Always bring some insect repellent with you, as there are plenty around!- Take very careful and attention to refuelling, mainly on day two, because there are not may gas stations on the track of day three.

Nafpaktos is a beautiful coastal town were the big adventure starts.

On the day before starting the track, we strongly recommend a visit to the castle, were you can be delighted by an amazing view and then to spend the afternoon and evening on the harbour area, enjoying the relaxed environment and the warming atmosphere of the bars and restaurants around this place.

This first day will lead us to Kalavryta, a city in the middle of the mountains of Peloponnisos. To cross the Gulf of Corinth on our way south, we have two options, the Charilaos Trikoupis Bridge or by boat. If you have the opportunity and the time, try to cross it by boat on this first day and then you can take the bridge on the next day, were the schedule will be tighter. The boats are available every hour to do this cross.

After the cross of the Gulf, we’ll be climbing the mountains immediately. The beautiful landscapes are mandatory and we have on the north side the Gulf of Corinth but also on the west side the city of Patras just below us.

After this, we’ll get to the interior of the Peloponnisos region, crossing several mountains until reaching Kalavryta, final destination of day one. Despite being a day with not that many kilometres, it can still be a long riding day, depending on the condition of the track. In case of bad conditions there are two alternatives available to short up the track. If you have the time to do the full track, don’t hesitate because the last section of the day is a remarkable riding experience.

Please note that this gas station is closed from 2 – 5 pm. The day end’s up in Ano Chora a beautiful small town surrounded by mountains. There’s a small, but nice, restaurant were you can enjoy and taste the local gastronomy

The sunrise in Ano Chora can be pretty delightful and it show us the kind of landscape that will be with us on the third day of the ACT ride.

Even though it’s not a long day in terms of distance, it will provide an intense off road experience, with a not so fast track to a truly amazing mountain landscape. On the middle, there is a rocky section that should be avoided if anyone feels already tired and the alternative route should be used instead. On the final of this stage, after crossing the Panaitoliko Mountain, we’ll arrive on Karpenisi, the place to refuel the motorcycles and also the human stomachs. Here, it’s easy to find motorcycle-shops, supermarkets, restaurants and hotels. For those thinking on camping, 30kms ahead, already on the track of day 4, you’ll find the perfect spot, a huge valley, near the old Viniani Bridge, that crosses the river Tavropos. The place is absolutely stunning (if you’re camping, don’t forget to read the Special Advices section)
