Montenegro & Albania

ACT Albania & Montenegro track

ACT Montenegro /Albania is a adventure motorcycle trip starting in the mountains of Montenegro, crossing into Albania from the Durmitor National Park to Leskovik close to the Greece border. With 6 stages and 1150 km it is a rather difficult ACT. We even suggest to divide the 6th day into 2 passages. Beside it is a perfect connection between ACT Croatia and ACT Greece and can be ridden in both directions.

A perfect start for this ACT could be Dubrovnik in Croatia and a good end point to return to mainland Europe and catch the return ferry is Igoumenitsa in Greece. The track meanders through high mountain terrain partly above 1000 meters altitude, so be aware of sudden weather changes and snow in the beginning and end of the season.

Warning: The Track is rated difficult in general. There are medium difficult sections and sometime alternative routes onroad and offroad. Nevertheless we suggest due to the remoteness and difficulty level to ride this track as experience rider and never alone. In our understanding, this means that you should have completed at least several full-day advanced off-road training courses at a professional training school. Additionally, you should rate yourself as very experienced offroad rider with experienced handling capabilities of your bike and not be afraid of heights!

The Departure from Durmitor National Park is spectacular.

The Tracks during the first day are medium difficulty and go through spectacular landscapes in the highlands of the Montenegro national Parks. You are crossing some farmland with Agriculture and Animals, so please be cautious and respectful. There are two tracks, an easier version and a more difficult version. There are plenty locations for breaks and even places to stay overnight if you want to spend more days on this track. The day on the harder offroad track adds about 2 hours to the journey. The Day 1 ends in the spectacular Park Prirode Komovi where you can expect a beautiful sunset. Nevertheless you still need to leave the mountain area which is min. 1 more hour, so be aware of the incoming night.

The Day 2 starts with beautiful asphalt roads.

But be aware that you will be crossing the border to Albania in the morning, this can take some time. The twisty onroad sections are spectacular with great views and plenty of places to stop. The offroad section are hard and stony. In the afternoon you will be entering into the Theth Valley from the north. This section of the road is very hard and difficult and can take some time to ride, also there are less services. Make sure to gas up before entering the valley. Stony tracks with big gaps and altitude differences make this track very special with spectacular view. You will leave the valley to the west heading towards Shkoder near Lake Skutari where you will find plenty of hotels and camping spots.

Day 3 starts early with a fast ride on a very bad tarmac road to Lake Koman

If you want to reach the ferry, make sure you book in advance and you are there in time, preferably 1 hour early. Boarding takes some time. Ride through the tunnel, go around all trucks and busses and contact the service guys at the ferry immediately. The boat ride is about 2 hours and is spectacular. At the end you will find a crazy but perfect tarmac road for some 2 hours alongside the different Dams with great views and places to stop.

The Offroad sections in the afternoon take plenty of time and it is not easy to navigate the correct route. Most of the track is great offroad mountain track and deep in the woods but rideable quite nice. Hard section “Hellbania” is especially difficult after rainy days, but since it is a section of 500 meters you can push through if needed. The rest of the track is partly used by trucks from the Mines in the region, so be careful with oncoming traffic.

You can shortcut at the end of the day if needed since you are crossing the new highway. If it is getting late, be aware that the last part of the track is still challenging and not recommended to ride in the dark.

Day 4 is a ride through the city and then a tarmac road with some major potholes.

Some nice twisty roads lead to great fast riding but be aware of the partly bad road conditions. After two hours you enter the off-road sections which are nice roads alongside the green hills overviewing the valleys.

The Track is earthy and rocky, so good to ride, but steep hillsides need great attention of the rider. Some big stones and harder stony sections on the roads also lead to a slow to medium pace sometimes. Youn will encounter several bunkers that you can access by the track.

By the river crossing you find plenty of locations for lunchbreak. Many roads are currently being paved in this region, so be aware of construction on one hand and do not be disappointed if sections are newly paved. It is like it is.

Wake up Call

Day 5 starts with a hardcore uphill loose gravel section that can give you a hard time immediately at the beginning of the day.

We have an alternative track for you here. Right after the hard section there is some nice gravel track towards a little town with a great market and cafes to relax.

You will encounter a lot more gravel roads during the day. It is only 120 km but it takes quite a bit of time. Views are spectacular and you are getting up to some drier landscape with big views atop the mountains. Midday you will be getting into the region of the famous Holta Kanyon (Kanioni i Holtës) where you can have a jump into the water and have a nice break in a cafe right beside.

In the afternoon there are quite some demanding tracks with lots of loose gravel, big stones and deep ruts, so take your time. The Day ends with nice gravel and some good tarmac at the end of the day, entering Berat. Make sure to spend some time at sunset at the castle which is a steep hill climb with the bikes but you can get all the way in, so just continue riding. Stay overnight near the castle or the famous 5-star hotel in town.

This is nuts. This is a crazy day. You have several options.

First, if you are exhausted and tired, take the all tarmac track to the end. Enjoy great riding on newly paved roads, have a coffee, have nice lunch and continue to the end of the track, stay overnight in the distillery and celebrate the arrival with a gin.

Second. Do the hardcore 85% /160 km offroad Track with some nice gravel track but at least 100 km hardcore stones, ruts, mud. This is not only a difficult ride. We do not recommend this track for anybody who has not easily handled the first 5 days. We do not recommend this track if it is raining. The track is hard with big stones and slow pace, since the start is an easy fun ride 35 km you will have to decide beforehand if you are willing to do this to the end. Minimum 5 hours time need to be calculated when entering the offroad. Most of the track is alongside steep hills. It is hard to overtake, to turn around or the pass oncoming traffic in the middle of the track.

It can be spectacular fun with good weather and good riding skills. It will be a long, long day.

Third: Do half of the track and the rest on road. So you can choose if you do first part onroad and afternoon offroad or the other way round. You can also decide to do 2 days out of this track since it can be lots of fun if you take your time.
